Editor’s note: NAIJ.com contributor Udochukwu Ikwuagwu
analyses the new face of Mavin Records and the
transformation of ace producer Don Jazzy from a ‘Don
Corleone-esque character’ to a circus ring master.
The Mavins in still for their Jantamata video
Don Jazzy shed his previously associated Vito
Corleone-esque persona for the friendlier, less stoic,
very accessible character he now displays following the
unfortunate collapse of Mo’Hits Records. But one thing
many will observe happens to be the generously
amusing persona that tags along with the Don like his
now-discarded cane. On social media, that humorous
side comes to bear in hilarious one-liners, memes, quips
and skits, and it’s no surprise that he’s one of the most
followed Nigerian celebrities. But a more interesting fact
is the way that persona has been transferred to Mavin
Records artistes; Tiwa Savage, Dr. SID, D’Prince, Korede
Bello, Reekado Banks, and Di’ja—they all have taken on
a humorous side and could rival some A-list acts in a
stand-up comedy battle.
Here are the six videos where Don Jazzy turned his
singers to competent comedians:
1. Mungo Park
Comedians sometimes delve into self-deprecating skits
touching on their own failings, weaknesses,
inadequacies, depressing childhood or dysfunctional
family structure, while sending ribs-a-cracking. Julius
‘D’Genius’ Agwu called kids to mock his marital status
in the early 2000s with the question: When will you
marry? Don Jazzy becomes the butt of the joke as
Korede Bello takes a dig at his label boss. Interestingly,
Korede Bello also lampoons his nosey self- oga poke
noser, shey you wan’ discover Mungo Park?
2. Oga Titus
Don Jazzy débuted his Judge Jazzy character via
instagram skits and memes that flooded his twitter
timeline; the hilarious memes were him pushing his
comic brand, doubling on the successes of his newly-
found persona. On Oga Titus, Judge Jazzy, a character
in D’Prince’s (who tells the joke) humorous video,
sentences a dubious couple to 100 years imprisonment;
the male suspect- Imeh Bishop- with N263.95 manages
to live large with his shoplifting girlfriend before the long
arms of Judge Jazzy catch up with them. One isn’t sure
if Oga Titus was named after the movie featuring Mr.
Ibu, as the cover art shows and the subsequent 2015
movie, but one could care less while laughing out loud.

3. Kabiyesi
Judge Jazzy returns as character in Kabiyesi to
adjudicate over Dr. Sid and Frank Donga’s case. When
two hungry perhaps unemployed (given Donga’s
lucklessness in finding a job) men etch a plan to find
sustenance, they fail at the first plot. But when they
return in stolen royal garbs, storming one owambe after
another sun shines on their path. Not long before the
testosterone-driven Dr. Sid flirts with a bride and they
are bundled before Judge Jazzy.
4. Sugar Baby
What do you do when your first comic outing fails to
amuse and the joke’s on you? You re-strategize, read
the handbook your label boss penned in his hey days as
a young comedian. That’s what Reekado Banks did
when his glasses wearing-Mr. Latin character on Corner
was short-lived. He found a rather amusing character in
the hopeless romantic frame on Sugar Baby. Yes, he
got the girl in Corner and after breaking up with her, she
decides to sabotage his plan of finding new love even
involving the ever amorous Adekunle Gold. And while at
it; infuse lyrics with homour-tinged children song with
Don Jazzy doing ad libs.
5. Take Kiss
For Hadiza Salma Blell’s transformation from an urban-
winning songstress who grew up on Marvin Gaye,
Tracy Chapman, Dianna Ross, MJB, to one possessing
shtick to rival the best of comediennes in the land, she
had to test the bubblegum pop waters. That Di’Ja had to
resort to music for the postpubescents with Don
Jazzy’s call to “take kiss” is far from what brings the
amusement, but Di’Ja’s character and others involved
present material for laughter. In the colourful video, her
character has a WTF face not impressed by the kiss of
one, and totally rejects another; could halitosis, absence
of skill or unattractiveness (on the kisser’s part) be
responsible? Another gets his cheek slapped either for
the same concerns or being forward. NB: Yhem yhem
isn’t for everybody!

6. Eminado
Asinamali-inspired video introduces us to the humorous
life of Tiwa Savage ably assisted by the don himself.
Don Jazzy takes up Super Ted, Shrek, Barney
costumes, and a pipe-smoking aristocrat persona who
attempts to woo a blushing Tiwa Savage with his
“money in the bank”; then runs behind her making faces
while she playfully entertains on the drums, violin and
guitar. Four Tiwa Savages are playful in the studio;
three Tiwa Savages appear on stage reminiscent of
Outcast’s Hey Ya.
